D'Sonoqua by Emily Carr -To the Totem Forests
http://collections.ic.gc.ca/totems/exhibit/kwak/gwintro2.htm
Often appearing in myths, the most frequent form of Tsonoqua is that of a giantess, with a huge body and head, long pendulous breasts, upthrust hands and bushy unkempt hair. Her face has a heavy brow, an arched nose and sunken cheeks and eye sockets. Her rounded lips are pursed to utter the cry, "HU HU!" Tsonoqua is also described as sleepy, with half closed eyes. She is vain, stupid and clumsy, but at the same time is a horrid and threatening figure. On her back, Tsonoqua carries a basket in which she collects children, taking them home to eat.

"Like the D'Sonoquas of the other villages she was carved into the bole of a red cedar tree. . . . No violence coarsened her; no power domineered to wither her. She was graciously feminine. Across her forehead her creator had fashioned the Sistheutl, or mythical two-headed sea-serpent. One of its heads fell to either shoulder, hiding the stuck-out ears, and framing her face from a central parting on her forehead which seemed to increase its womanliness." Emily Carr

Totem Poles World-Wide
The cross-cultural fascination with totem poles is reflected by the surprisingly high number of totem pole sites on the World Wide Web. Although these websites are spread over ten countries, only two of these - Canada and USA - have an indigenous tradition of totem poles. This internet resource lists selected totem pole websites by their place of origin: American (33); Austrian (1); Belgian (1); British (4); Canadian (53); Dutch (3); Finnish (1); German (5); Icelandic (1); and Swedish (1). Of a total of 102 sites, 18 are identified as aboriginal-owned (First Nations).

State of Jefferson Alpaca Association
The mythical State of Jefferson lies a mountainous area that spans the border between Northern California and Southern Oregon. The original borders of Oregon and California were arbitrarily set by east coast bureaucrats and do not reflect the unique characteristics, geography, economy or citizens of this area. Stretching from the northern end of Californias central valley past the northern terminus of the Siskyou Mountains, and from the Pacific Ocean to east of the Cascade Mountains, this area is distinctive for its natural resources, rural atmosphere and independent population.

What in the Sam Hill?
What is the origin of this familiar "Sam Hill" question?
http://www.livinggoldpress.com/samhill.htm
Sam Hill - Another of his projects was the International Peace Arch at Blaine Washington. Construction started in July 1920. It was a Doric arch that was earthquake proof. The foot walls were reinforced concrete built on wooden piles driven 25 feet into the earth. The arch is built to straddle the border so one foot is in Canadian soil and the other on American soil. It used 800 cubic yards of concrete, 50 tons of steel, and is 67 feet high. There are two flag staffs on top. The cornerstone was laid on September 6, 1921. There are bronze gates; on the U.S. side the portal says, "children of a common mother," on the Canadian side it says, "brethren dwelling together in unity." It was dedicated in 1922. In 1932, Interstate 5 was rerouted to pass by the arch. The timing was largely due to the formation of Peace Arch Park, with 26 acres on the U.S. side and 23 acres on the Canadian side.

Stonehenge Maryhill, WA
Maryhill's Stonehenge was built by Sam Hill as a tribute to the soldiers of Klickitat County who lost their lives, Maryhill's Stonehenge is the first monument in our nation to honor the dead of World War I. The structure is a full-scale replica of England's famous Neolithic Stonehenge. A Quaker pacifist, Hill was mistakenly informed that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, and thus constructed the replica to remind us that ''humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war.''
